The 2nd Annual Cambridge Jazz Festival happened on July 27th...and it was happening! A mellow crowd of over 7,000 jazz lovers flocked to the scene at MIT’s University Park…and as far as anyone could tell, they all left happy.
The crowd kicked back on the beautifully landscaped lawn and soaked in: the fresh sounds of Toth Brothers; the electric energy of Eguie Castrillo and his Latin Jazz Connection; the piano mastery of the legendary JoAnne Brackeen; and the extraordinary performance provided by Lazlo Gardony and his group that included Billy Pierce on tenor sax and Stan Strickland on bass clarinet.
Later in the day, when Cambridge home girl Nnenna Freelon took the stage, backed by the Ron Savage Trio, the atmosphere in the park became magic, as Nnenna treated dazzled the thousands in attendance with a remarkably varied and nuanced set interpreting songs made famous by “Lady Day”, Billie Holliday.
The entire event was lovingly documented by four fabulous photographers, two videographers and one great sound recordist. Keep your eye on this site, as we will be updating these images (and sounds) going into the fall and presenting new information about the 3rd Annual (2016) Cambridge Jazz Festival.
For now, we hope you’ll sit back for a few moments and enjoy this first set of images from the 2015 Festival set to Nneena Freelon singing “Blue Skies”.
